This punishment was for contempt of court. The Ex tradition Act under which the above orders were made was passed in 1784. All 'british subjects had to reside within 10 miles of some of the principal settlements unless they held a special license from the governor-general, the East India Company or President and no one could reside beyond the time specified in the license.
