Orphaned child Heidi first lives with Dete's aunt, but Dete would like to focus on her career. So he brings Heidi to his grandfather, a strange old man who lives in an alpine hut far from the neighboring village (he is therefore called Alm-Onu, Alpöh or Almöh in German). Uncle Alm is kind, but doesn't trust anyone and wants to protect the child from all the evil in the world. So he refuses to send Heidi to school; instead, he goes to the pasture with Peter, the shepherd who tends the goats. This Alpine idyll comes to an abrupt end when Aunt Dete re-enters and brings Heidi to Frankfurt (Germany), where she stays with Clara, the paralyzed daughter of a rich family, and is supposed to learn something. Heidi, who has never seen a city, much less a city, travels over 500 km (300 miles) to one of the largest cities in Europe, located in a foreign country with a different culture. Thanks to Clara's grandmother, Heidi learns to read and write, but she is not able to get acquainted with the strict discipline of the middle-class house (Fraulein Rottenmeier works as the headmistress). Heidi is very lonely and depressed by the gray nameless city. He becomes homesick and starts sleepwalking. Miss Rottenmeier is worried not about the fate of the poor child, but rather because she thinks the old house is haunted. In the end, Clara's father Herr Stresemann and the family's sympathetic doctor decide to stay up until midnight to find out about the ghosts. When the doctor sees Heidi walking in her sleep, he finds the correct diagnosis and sends her back to the Alps. Next summer, Clara goes there to visit Heidi. They go to the pasture and Heidi shows Clara all the beauty of her alpine world. Peter becomes terribly jealous, and in a moment of feeling discreet, he pushes the empty wheelchair down a valley so that it bursts. Clara wants to see flowers and has to walk - and her desire is strong enough to overcome trees. Heal body, mind and soul in a healthy alpine world - all's well that ends well.
