One afternoon in October, a carryall was coming along one of the great roads leading into Boston. There was a gentleman and a lady upon the front seat Of the carryall. On the back seat there was a beautiful and happy looking girl, about seventeen years of age, at one side, and a bright-eyed boy on the other, who appeared to be about twelve. A much smaller boy, of a mild and gentle expression of countenance, sat between them. This boy in the middle was Caleb. He was coming back to Boston, after having spent the sum mer with his grandmother, Madam Rachel, in the country. The lady and gentleman on the front seat were his father and mother.
