The Language of Marble. Masterpieces of Classical Sculpture inaugurates the Artemia – Monographic Studies series as a space devoted to depth and reflection, conceived not as a superficial survey but as a rigorous inquiry into the monographic form. The volume proposes a reading of classical sculpture as a true visual language through which ancient civilizations articulated ideals of beauty, power, divinity, and human perfection. It traces the evolution of Greek and Roman sculpture from the frontal rigidity of the Archaic age to the emotional dynamism of the Hellenistic period, showing how each stylistic transformation reflects a changing conception of humanity and the cosmos. The sculpted body is never a simple imitation of nature, but a deliberate construction of order: proportion, symmetry, and harmony become instruments through which a rational structure of the world is made visible. Marble, demanding and luminous, assumes a central role not only technically but philosophically; in its resistance and its capacity to capture light, the translation of idea into form is fulfilled. Particular attention is given to systems of proportion, from the Canon of Polykleitos to its Roman reformulation in Vitruvian theory, demonstrating how the measurement of the human body became a paradigm of universal balance. Classical sculpture thus emerges as a synthesis of anatomical observation and mathematical construction, in which each part acquires meaning through its relationship to the whole. In the equilibrium between tension and repose, structure and surface, a grammar of form is defined—one destined to shape centuries of artistic history. The work also explores the sacred and civic dimensions of sculpture: cult statues within temples, public monuments in agoras and forums, and sculptural programs integrated into architecture. Marble becomes a vehicle of ideology and collective memory, inscribing shared values into religious and urban space. With Rome, this language is translated and expanded: realistic portraiture, narrative relief, and imperial monumentality reveal how classical form adapted to new political needs without losing structural coherence. The volume further follows the afterlife of ancient sculpture in the Renaissance and Neoclassical periods, showing how the rediscovery of Greco-Roman models generated renewed reflection on the relationship between body, proportion, and transcendence. From Michelangelo’s expressive tension to Canova’s formal purity, marble continues to be perceived as a privileged medium of moral and aesthetic elevation. Enriched by a carefully curated visual apparatus and an extensive bibliography, The Language of Marble presents itself as both analytical and evocative. Far from superficial fragmentation, the text invites a slower gaze and deeper interpretation, restoring to classical sculpture its original dimension as a discourse on the world. Ultimately, it argues that ancient sculpture is not merely a chapter in art history, but a mode of thought translated into stone—where beauty emerges not by chance, but through measure, discipline, and vision.
